ADA Acoustics & Media Consultants GmbH

After the defeat of the German division, and upon meeting the objective requirements, the engineering firm ADA Acoustic Design Ahnert was initially founded with two colleagues. From day one, the software program EASE, which was at that time still DOS-based, was available. As a result, the feasibility of room- and electro-acoustic designs could be efficiently verified. Large projects during the early 90s, such as the planning of a new sound reinforcement system for the German Opera (Deutsche Oper) in Berlin, supported the start-up phase.

A similar experience was gathered during the reconstruction of the Plenary Assembly of the Parliament in Ankara, where in 1996, for the first time, a fingerprint system for the identification of the Members of Parliament was introduced, which is still in operation in its original form till today. The number of awarded contracts in the country and abroad was then increasing as well as the number of employees. In 2010, the activities profile of the sole-property company ADA Acoustic Design Ahnert was transferred to ADA Acoustics & Media Consultants GmbH. Major tasks are still ahead of our team, such as the extensive Al Maktoum International Airport, which is currently under construction and is intended in its first construction phase to serve around 120 million passengers per year.

Theater / Movie Theater / Opera / Concert

Theaters, operas, concert halls and movie theaters represented and represent a focal point of our planning activities. ​​ Mainly, room and building acoustics investigation and design works are in the foreground, but we carry out as well the planning of the usually complex sound systems in such halls and the design of electroacoustic enhancement systems for variable acoustics.

Conference Centers / Hotels

In Conference centers and hotels, the primary concern is the acoustic design of the lobbies and the meeting and ball rooms. Since speech intelligibility should be high in these rooms, necessary absorption measures are required. Soundproofing also plays an important role, since hotels must guarantee quiet nights for sleeping. Additionally, a number of media systems are planned in such venues.

TV- and Sound-Studios

While our partner office WSDG designs such TV, radio and other sound studios from an architectural point of view, ADA is primarily concerned with the room and building acoustics design and the necessary audio and video systems in these rooms. In this context, the ideas and wishes of the client are carefully examined and the requirements of the sound directors are employed as accurately as possible.

Sports-, Multi-purpose halls / Stadiums

The planning of these facilities has been part of the core business for ADA from the beginning. In the 1990s, small national stadiums and multi-purpose halls were planned, but since 2004 with the awarding of the World Cup to Germany and with the subsequent World Cup Championships in South Africa, Brazil and now in Russia, work on major stadiums has increased significantly.

Airports / Train Stations

Planning of acoustics and sound systems in train stations and airports are part of ADA's usual field of activity. Special experience in modern railway stations was gained at the beginning of this century with the construction of the Berlin main station, where in addition to room acoustical measures, the targeted sound coverage of the different platforms had to be planned. ADA participated in Berlin Airport, which is under construction, as well as facilities in Qatar, Bahrain and the UAE. Currently, ADA is working on the major Al Maktoum International airport in Dubai.

Trade Fairs / Ehibitions / Museums

Exhibition and exhibition rooms are usually large multi-purpose halls with changing applications. Usually, these halls are not acoustically well-planned for cost reasons and are quite reverberant when empty. This increases the demands on the sound systems, so that ceiling loudspeakers become insufficient. In museums, in addition to the room and building acoustics measures, media systems are to be planned, which ADA has successfully carried out at the National Museum of Beijing in China.

Colleges / Schools / Libraries

Universities and schools require spaces with high speech intelligibility, which means that in the lecture halls and seminar rooms, proper room and building acoustics design must be carried out. It is important in the larger venues to employ adequate sound and video systems. All rooms should be centrally networked to allow for audio and video transmissions between individual halls and even between educational institutes in different locations.

Public and Government Buildings

Public buildings require acoustic works and media systems, which usually have to follow extensive tendering processes, which are then strictly controlled by the client. In doing so, the individual planning stages must always be performed carefully. In addition to the acoustics and systems mentioned, IT systems are playing an increasingly important role. In government buildings, important speeches and statements should be available for archiving.

Houses of Worship

Broadly speaking, worship houses are churches, monasteries, mosques and synagogues. While until the Reformation Age the understanding of the spoken word in these institutions was of a secondary importance (with the exception of mosques), today this is very important in all worship houses. Since there is usually an increased and also focused reverberation in these usually large buildings, either very decentralized loudspeaker system or strongly directed sound line arrays are necessary for the sound coverage of the congregation.
